Keralite priest Fr Tom Uzhunnalil, who was abducted from Yemen in 2016, has been rescued. He was kidnapped from an old-age home run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in southern Yemeni city of Aden last year.

In December 2016, Father Uzhunnalil had appealed to Pope Francis and the Indian government through a purported video to secure his release from his captors.

The priest was rescued after the intervention of the Oman foreign ministry. The ministry of external affairs has confirmed the report. “I am happy to inform that Fr Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued,” external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who hails from Kottayam has been taken to Muscat in Oman from where he will return to his home in Kerala.
