The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the UDF have called for a hartal in Kottayam district on Tuesday in protest against the police apathy which resulted in the death of Kevin Joseph, who was apparently killed after he was taken away forcibly by an armed gang on Sunday.

The hartal will be held from 6 am to 6 pm.

Kevin P Joseph (23), a Dalit Christian and Neenu Chacko (21), a Christian from an affluent family, had married against the wishes of the bride’s parents two days ago.

Kevin Joseph was abducted allegedly by his wife’s family members, was found dead on Monday morning in the Chaliyakkara stream, near Thenmala, in Kollam district.

It was a 10-member gang led by Neenu’s brother Shanu that attacked Kevin’s house in Kottayam and abducted him along with his relative Anish.

Though his wife Neenu filed a complaint in the Police Station, policemen at the station reportedly told her that the Chief Minister was in the district and all officials were busy with his schedule and the case would be taken up only after he left the district. Neenu told television channels that the police did not take up her complaint seriously citing lack of personnel due to the CM’s visit.

The police have filed case against 10 people, including Shanu Chacko, brother of Kevin’s wife Neenu Chacko. They have taken one person, Ishan, into custody in connection with the case so far
