Calicut University conferred honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) on Malayalam cine actor Mohanlal and athlete P T Usha at a special convocation ceremony held at the university campus.
Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam, who is also the University Chancellor, conferred the honorary Doctorate of Literature(D.Litt) to both personalities.
Education minister C Raveendranath, varsity vice-chancellor K Mohammed Basheer, among others attended the function.
Mohanlal was bestowed with D. Litt (Doctor of Letters) for his for his decades long contributions to the Malayalam film industry and also the film industry of other states. The 53-year-old P T Usha, known as “Payyoli Express”, has been honoured for her achievements in sports, both in national as well as international events.
Mohanlal expressed his gladness to receive the honorary degree which had been conferred on many legends. “When I received D.Litt which was received on many legends, I take it as a great responsibility. It makes me feel that I am carrying a heavy responsibility on my head like the crown of Kathakali in the movie ‘Vaanaprastham. I strongly believe that the blessings of my teachers made me to achieve D.LItt,” said Mohanlal after receiving the honorary degree. “Cinema is an art form, a result of dedication of a number of people. All my success belongs to those who have contributed in my pursuit of art, ranging from writers and directors to makeup artists, lighting crew, etc,” he added.
Usha, said that she was proud of having achieved everything that she hoped for in her career, except the Olympic medal which she missed by a whisker 35 years ago. “I am trying to build young athletes without refusing anyone’s chance. “I firmly believe that the country will be able to achieve the Olympic medal in 2020 in Tokyo or in Paris Olympics in 2024 if we work unitedly,” she added.
